Grand Mosque at night

Darren and I went to the Grand Mosque last night. It’s official name is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It’s breathtaking.

The closer you get to the building, the more beautiful it becomes. There is so much detail and the sheer size of it is humbling. A few statistics about the Mosque:

  • The Mosque is large enough to accommodate 40,000 worshipers
  • The main prayer hall can hold 7,000 worshipers
  • The carpet in the main prayer hall is considered to be the world’s largest carpet. It measures 60,570 square feet and was made by 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters. There are 2,268,000,000 knots in the carpet. It took about two years to make.
  • It cost $545 million to build.

Here are some of my favorite photos. You can click any of them to get a larger view.
