Last night was fabulous. Darren worked a long day and came up to the lounge when he was done. One by one, all the other Navy men started showing up, too. I got to meet lots of Darren’s cohorts, including his two bosses. After a while there was a table full of us, all chatting about design and photography and work and life. It was great. Champagne was flowing—the men were drinking beers.
After 90 minutes of socializing, Darren and I excused ourselves. We had a dinner date with the hotel manager at 8:30 p.m. We met him downstairs at the Italian restaurant, Prego’s. We all three showed up at the entrance at the same time. We all hugged and I for one was looking forward to a great dinner. We dined for two glorious hours. We talked about all kinds of things. Work, family, travel, food, gardening, television shows, movies…I loved it. And the FOOD. We had fresh bread with olive oil and olive tapenade. We had calamari. I had a delicious seafood soup. Dinner plates were spaghetti, salmon, and mushroom risotto. I had the risotto and tastes of the spaghetti. Who knew you could get such delicious Italian food in the Middle East? For dessert we ordered chocolate gelato, tiramisu (with the option of alcohol or no alcohol), and creme brulee. And did I mention we washed it all down with Perrier and two bottles of California cabernet?
It was just such a nice time. By the end of the night we all had our smart phones out to schedule our next dinner together. Next Wednesday, 8:30 p.m., at Rodeo Grill. I can hardly wait.
